Navigation PCB Profiles < Sediment contamination in San Leandro Bay, California

A study was conducted in 1998 to assess the extent of sediment contamination in the San Leandro Bay, which is a shallow embayment located south of Alameda Island on the east side of the San Francisco Bay. Sediment samples from 60 sites located throughout San Leandro Bay and four tributaries were collected and analyzed for trace metals, PCBs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and various synthetic biocides. The general goal of the study was to evaluate the distribution of sediment contamination and identify possible sources and pathways of contamination to San Leandro Bay

PCB concentrations in San Leandro Bay sediment were adapted for use in this study from the following report:

Methods of quality assurance/quality control for sample collection and analysis were similar to methods used by the RMP. PCB concentrations represent the sum of 36 individual PCB congeners routinely measured by the RMP.
